Rabat is a dynamic capital, especially on streets that bustle with the excitement of shops and open-air markets. Traditional crafts exist alongside artisanal objects reinterpreted by modern designers. In Souk Sebbat and Souika streets, the stalls are bursting with leather goods, slippers and bags, fabrics and traditional clothing. Push on to Rue des Consuls to ogle silver jewelry and the famous Rabat carpets that have sealed the city's reputation.
Each year, the city puts on the Mawazine Festival of World Rhythms, which attracts enthusiasts, passionate fans and the merely curious. The Mawazine festival is at the intersection of music and culture and happens to be one of the most cosmopolitan festivals in vogue right now.
Bouregreg Marina is located at the mouth of the Bouregreg River, on the shore of Salé. Sheltered from the Atlantic waves, it is overlooking prestigious historical sites, like the esplanade of the Hassan Tower or the Kasbah of the Oudayas. Inland marina can now accommodate up to 240 boats from 6 to 30 m, with a draft of 2 to 4 meters. It aims to become a “must” for sailors on their way to West Africa, to the Caribbean or to North American shores.
Recognized by UNESCO as a modern capital and historic city, Rabat is a distillation of Moroccan heritage. Look first to Hassan Tower, an unfinished minaret that has been watching over the city for over eight centuries. At its base, you will find an esplanade and the famous Mohamed V mausoleum. This monument is more than a burial site; it is a tribute to Arabic-Islamic art showcasing all its charm. It is carved in white onyx and adorned with marble, plaster and delicately carved woodwork.
Elsewhere in the city, you will find Chellah, an ancient village whose vestiges still stand. Walk through its enormous gate and discover within its walls one of the country's most surprising archaeological sites.
Finally, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Kasbah of the Oudayas. Take time to stroll through and soak up the peacefulness of the place. Tour the gardens that enhance the appeal of this ancient fortress and the art galleries all around before taking a break on the patio of Café Maure to sip a delicious mint tea with Moroccan cookies.
